Hazards of Sewer Backups in Your Home

If you do not care for your pipes and drains properly, you could wind up with sewer backups in your home. This means the sewage that would normally go through the pipes, ends up in your tubs, sinks, and basement. This is dangerous on several levels. How Dangerous Are Sewer Backups?

If raw sewage (human waste) ends up in your home, it can make everyone incredibly sick. Sewage that has not been treated is full of several types of bacteria. These bacteria can lead to things like:

  • Streptococcus

These are just a few of the minor bacteria that can be found should sewage backup into your home. If you come in contact with these bacteria, even for a moment, they can make you sick. When a basement or bathroom fills up with sewage and items get soaked, they can contaminate things around them for weeks or months to come. If you happen to have a cut on your skin when you contact these bacteria, they have nearly an instant route to your bloodstream.

Each of these illnesses has the potential to alter your life. If they do not get immediate treatment, they could even lead to a hospitalization, or worse. It is never a good idea to try and manage any type of sewage at home. Even if you have a minor leak, if it means you going into the sewage to try and stop the leak, don’t do it.
